Choosing the Right Health Care Plan For You!

I have a quick question for you today! Are you "average" with regard to your Health Care Benefits?

November is usually the time of year when employees of major companies have the opportunity to review current benefits and make adjustments if needed.

Studies have actually shown that the average person spends more time purchasing a pair of shoes than reviewing their benefit choices. I don't know about you but my health and my finances are far more important than whether I want to buy the leather slip-on or the crocodile loafers.

I have always been very particular about healthcare so when making my choices, I knew I needed a plan where I could choose my own doctors. I realized this would cost a bit more monthly however I have had my Gynecologist for 25+ years and also love the ideal of "one stop shopping" at Mayo Clinic.

Just last night I was looking at my latest bill from Mayo Clinic for my breast Cancer Treatment. The total bill was close to $95,000.00! Wow, that's a lot of money but my out-of-pocket cost will be under $3,000. Also I looked at the peace of mind and convenience of having the doctors I wanted located in one place and being about to have control over my treatment plans. This was priceless.

I would like to encourage anyone reading this who has insurance to take a good look at what your health care needs have been previously. This will be a good guide as to what to expect in the future. Don't forget to take a look at the HRA's (Health Reimbursement Accounts) there is a list available of all the things that are covered and don't forget that is tax free money but you HAVE to use it by the end of the year! This account saves me hundreds of dollars yearly. Here are some things you should take into consideration when choosing benefits:

1. How many people need to be covered?

2. Any chronic illnesses in the family requiring regular doctor visits?

3. Any regular prescriptions being filled?

4. Does your company have a Flexible Spending acct or Health Reimbursement Plan?

5. Do you wish to pick your own doctor or do you mind being assigned a provider?

6. Do you have a spouse and does his/her company provide better options?

7. Anyone covered wear eyeglasses ** major reimbursable expense for HRA's?

8. Any kids in sports programs/ or on sports teams?**potentially more health expenses

Do your homework, make a wise choice. Let's not be average with regards to our health!
